Shrimp Count Sizes

Shrimp are normally graded by size and count, meaning the average number of shrimp to make 1 pound. The higher the number, the smaller the shrimp. In some areas, jumbo shrimp are referred to as prawns, but the prawn is actually a completely different species in the lobster family.

Determining how much to buy will depend on the size of the shrimp. Generally, count on 1/3 pound to 1/2 pound of shelled shrimp per person. This definitely could be a minimum for many shrimp lovers. 

The amount of shrimp you get per pound is determined by its size. These are the average shrimp counts you can expect in one pound:

• Colossal: 10 shrimp or less

• Jumbo: 11 to 15

• Extra-Large: 16 to 20

• Large: 21 to 30

• Medium: 31 to 35

• Small: 36 to 45

• Miniature: about 100

It is so important that when you purchase shrimp, you know the count or how to distinguish if you were sold the correct count. All of our shrimp are counted and graded by our deck hands on the boat, as they pick them from the pile.

We always keep in stock Jumbo Shrimp, year round. Available to ship anywhere to your door! 

We catch colossal shrimp only during certain parts of the white shrimp seasons and when we get brown shrimp in our rock shrimp seasons. 

Most of our Royal Red Shrimp are indeed colossal as well.
